This summer in Osaka, I have seen a matsuri (festival) and met a Shishimai. (Lion-dance creature).
For the luck it have bit my head. During the event I was really amazed with the local community, and how they were engaged with this celebration.
Seeing Shishimai dance, I have started to see some resemblence with other folk customs that I know from Europe. Unfortunately some of our traditions that I remember are not so celebrated these days.
This is an opening work for a project Festival, in which I want to take a closer look at festival creatures from around the world. I want to see the symbols and archetypes that they are represent, and compare them.
